Tubthumping: Bears Stay Cool at BC Wildlife Park

Two grizzly bears play in a tub at Kamloops Forest Fire Park

Splish, splash two bears were having a bath on a Thursday afternoon at BC Wildlife in Kamloops.

The two grizzly bears stayed cool in the summer heat in a tub filled with water that had been donated by Surplus Herby’s.

In an Instagram post, a bear can be seen cautiously exiting the den area towards the tub, but wastes no time throwing the tub out and hitting it like a toy.

Another bear walked straight into the tub, “thinking everything was fine.”

Animal park zookeepers have found interesting ways to keep animals hydrated and cool during the heat wave that has dominated much of the province.

On June 24, the grizzly bears were treated to bear-sized popsicles made from fruits and wildflowers.

However, popsicles aren’t for everyone, zookeepers noted, owls prefer a light mist, while bison want a full spray from a hose. Balu, the turkey, enjoys the shade under an umbrella and the elks have a pond to splash about.
